Mike Rutherford & Eddie Van Halen

  • This seems to most interesting part of the article:

    Quote

“We had some sessions. We wrote some songs. Bits. I’m not quite sure… I can’t find the tape. Quirky stuff, but it was fun to do.”

When Mark chipped in it would be “fun” to find them, Mike responded: “I know, I’ve got two boxes of cassettes. I’m not sure I’m mad enough to go through them! Lots of cassettes.

I see the problem here. There's heaps of unreleased material, one of the great treasure boxes of music history, patiently waiting to see the light of day - but hey, who would bother to go through all that old crap? Surely nobody cares for some old cassettes. Might just dump them old boxes...

  • Unfortunately as always Mike shows absolutely no interest in his past or any kind of archiving. He always seems the least interested and most dismissive of his past of all the band. He has reason to be proud of Smallcreeps Day (for example) but seems not to care

  • What is it you'd rather he did with it that would show he cared?

I understand he has been approached several times about allowing a 5.1 surround mix to be produced and apparently he's not interested.

Also, Smallcreep isn't accessible on Spotify which is really annoying.

  • What is it you'd rather he did with it that would show he cared?

I think he just has a general disdain for his past work which I find weird when some of it is really good. Personally I’d love a surround mix of the album and an expanded remaster - the great B-Side compression is only available digitally on an Anthony Phillips box set as far as I know

  • I think he just has a general disdain for his past work which I find weird when some of it is really good.

Is it genuine disdain, as in he's been vocally disdainful of it, or is it really that he's not especially sentimental about it or expressed interest in revisiting it in this way? They're not necessarily the same thing.

    Abandon all reason

  • I think it’s a bit of both. When I have heard him talk about either of his solo albums - and it’s not very often - he seems to have very little affection for either. He also generally seems like the least engaged when it comes to talking about the bands history. In that sense I think you’re probably right that he is also simply not a sentimental person.

I think, difficult though it may be, we need try and put ourselves in these guy's shoes for a moment and put things in perspective. They are in their 70's, they have been doing this for over half a century, they had quite a bit of success and they are extremely well off, it is only natural that they might have lost some drive. Mike seems to be still having fun, touring and releasing albums and I'm sure he doesn't need it, I fully understand if he cannot be bothered with digging out old tapes, or listening to old albums to improve them sonically and I'm happy for him, he gave me enough, I gave him my money, he gave me his music and at this stage memories and it was, as far as I'm concerned a fair trade, I don't feel he needs to cater to my wishes, I don't think it is disdainful at all, if fact I am sure he's proud of his achievements, it's just that right now, he probably prefers to do other things, things I'm incidentally not in the least interested in but who cares? I have Smallcreep's Day, I don't need the latest remaster to enjoy it, both from a musical, as well as a nostalgia point of view, because guess what? My level of fandom isn't as high or as intense as it used to be 40 years ago, that is probably why I'm able to cut them some slack. Oh, have I mentioned they are in their 70s?

I like that your third sentence starts to feel like something from Ulysses.

But anyway, agreed with all you said.

  • Totally agree as well, I don’t think he’s right or wrong to have that attitude. I do think there is a general issue with the way the bands legacy is managed but I have zero expectation or sense of entitlement that things should be different. It is what it is. It’s their work and they can do absolutely what they want with it. If I’d had a few beers with Eddie Van Halen 40 years ago and played around a bit, I might also think those memories were best left in the past, perhaps not standing up to scrutiny in the cold light of day.

But in all fairness, if you write an autobiographical book, it's an anecdote worth mentioning, only for the unlikelihood of it, not his fault if people start hoping for a double album and a tour with Wolfgang Van Halen replacing his father.

  • Again I agree with you - you seem to be trying to set our views up in opposition but I don't really think that's the case. It's a nice story, the reality is probably different.

I wasn't trying to rebuke you, sorry if it came across that way, it was just the general tone of some of the comments in the thread that perplexed me.
