Peter Gabriel – Recording Compendium, Part 8: 1995 – 2000 (EVE / OVO)

After Peter Gabriel had finished his Secret World Tour, it took a while until a new album came out. And this was a rather unexpected one.

Official stuff, Demos, Outtakes & more

Introduction
back to part 7 | on to part 9

After the end of the Secret World Tour, Peter Gabriel used the next few years for a variety of musical activities. In 1995, he even collaborated with his former Genesis colleagues: for the box set Genesis Archive 1967 – 1975, released in the summer of 1998, he re-recorded most of the vocal tracks from a live concert on The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway tour and also sang on the new recording of the Genesis song The Carpet Crawlers, released in 1999. He has also made numerous contributions to soundtracks, tribute albums, compilations and songs by fellow artists…

Album Tracks

For Peter Gabriel, the turn of the millennium was characterised by the millennium show OVO. The accompanying album, on which he did not sing many songs himself for the first time, was released for show visitors and mail order customers in April 2000 on his own label Real World, before being released worldwide in June without the track The Tree That Went Up

Three songs from the OVO album were re-recorded in orchestrated versions for New Blood in 2010-11: Father, Son, Downside-Up and The Nest That Sailed The Sky. The latter was also re-recorded for the pre-UP soundtrack Long Walk Home in the tracks A Sense Of Home and The Return Part 2. Fans would have to wait another two years for the next ‘proper’ Peter Gabriel album, although he had already mentioned in 2000 that he had around 130 song ideas – albeit at very different stages of production.
