Peter Gabriel – Recording Compendium, Part 9: 2001 – 2004 (Long Walk Home / Up / Hit)

The new century quickly delivered fruther releases after OVO. After a long time of silence, the output was suddenly impressive, not only in terms of quantity.

Official stuff, Demos, Outtakes & more

Last update: 28/02/2025
Introduction
back to part 8 | on to part 10

After the rather unfortunate course of OVO and the Millennium Dome show, Peter concentrated more on his next album, which had already been announced for release several times. In 2001, however, only an outtake from this album and a collaboration came to light…

At the same time as producing his new album UP, Peter Gabriel produced a soundtrack for the film Rabbit-Proof Fence, which was released on CD before UP as Long Walk Home. It also incorporated musical motifs from both OVO and UP

Album Tracks

Peter Gabriel’s album UP was released in September 2002 – 10 years after his last ‘real’ album US! In fact, some of the material used for the new album came from that album: Early demo versions of Sky Blue and Burn You Up, Burn You Down (which was removed from the final UP track list at the last minute) are well known. But there are also some documented steps in the making of the album from the period after that, with demo and live versions of Signal To Noise and a soundtrack version of I Grieve (see part 8). More recently, alternative versions of Sky Blue have been released on the Long Walk Home soundtrack with Cloudless and Ngankarrparni, and motifs from Signal To Noise have also been incorporated into some tracks.

Outtakes

The long time it took to create the album naturally suggested that only some of the material had ended up on it. And so it comes as no surprise that, in addition to the aforementioned Nocturnals, several other songs (more or less complete) appeared…

All the outtakes mentioned were probably candidates for the originally planned follow-up album I/O (see also our special feature The Making Of I/O), which, due to the wealth of material available, was to be released 18 months after UP, but was never released. There are many more titles in circulation, either mentioned in interviews or listed on www.BMI.com.

The following may also be working titles of previously released songs: Silver Screen, Chinese Whisper, Deep Heat, Fast One, Girl In The Water, Perfect Teeth, Subway Siren, The Talking House, Soft City, Funk Bone, Clap Trap, Macca, The Way Home, Tremolo, Egg Pain, Velvet, Escape, Will They Survive? One Amazing Day, Pearl Divers, Recently, To The Temple, After The Rain, Land Yacht Overlay, Children (Greenpeace), Velvet Curtain (69), Green (70), F Chords (101), Sufi Bone (99), Hillside (65), Flane (18), Drewetts (1), Sea View (51), Grief (63), 9 (97), Love Forever, Flame, Healing Tower…

Different versions

And, as is almost a matter of course, numerous different versions or remixes of the UP tracks have appeared over time, which probably only represent the tip of a huge iceberg…

Just in time for Christmas, HIT was released, a new showcase of work that also included a second CD called MISS in three different versions, as the track list was compiled differently for the US, EU and German markets. The relevant versions have already been listed in the corresponding section of the Compendium. Interestingly, Gabriel had also offered his own version of OVO, called Son Of OVO, as a release option to his record company at the time (see part 8). In the end, however, a Best Of compilation was preferred…

Collaborations

In addition to a new remix of the 87 B-side Curtains for the PC game Myst IV – Revelation in three versions (see part 5), there was also the release of a remake and jingle for a French TV station during the tour period…

Live Tracks

UP has toured extensively. First in autumn 2002 and then for most of the following year. This was documented in the form of a lavishly produced DVD and 19 ‘official bootlegs’ from the summer of 2003, each containing complete concerts on a double CD in an unedited soundboard mix. The tracklists depended on the show and were not always identical, so all tracks available in such a live version are listed here.

Members of Peter’s Full Moon Club had the chance to win tickets to a live performance at his Real World Studios. The event was a kind of dress rehearsal for some live performances at the end of November. An unfinished recording was promptly made available via OD2, a music download platform initiated by Gabriel.

The three songs Darkness, The Drop and The Book Of Love were re-recorded in 2010-11 for the orchestral album New Blood. The originally planned follow-up album, I/O, was a long time coming. Instead, in 2008, fans were treated to versions of the Big Blue Ball project, completed after more than 10 years, before Peter Gabriel unexpectedly turned his attention to the orchestral cover album Scratch My Back.
