Phil Collins – Recording Compendium, Part 10: 2000 – 2005
The tenth part of the Recording Compendium is dedicated to the time between Testify and the First Final Farewell Tour.
Part 10: Testify / Brother Bear | 2000 – 2005
Last update: 27/10/2024 | Overview | back to part 9 | on to part 11

At Disney’s insistence, Phil Collins converts his home studio from analogue to digital technology in the new millennium so that it is quicker to record ideas and demos for Brother Bear and send them as files via the Internet.
Phil also wants to record a few new tracks for the planned Love Songs compilation. He is taking this as an opportunity to work with Tarzan producer Rob Cavallo without a Disney contract. This year, two cover songs and a joint number are recorded and produced by Daryl Stuermer and Phil in Los Angeles. During this recording session, Phil suffers a hearing loss while recording vocals with headphones due to a mistake by the studio technician in the form of an extremely loud bang.

Curiously, the Love Songs concept then disappears into a drawer for the time being. However, the session was probably the starting point for Phil to concentrate on another solo album alongside his activities for Brother Bear.
In a programme on Swiss TV, in which Phil is also a guest, he accompanies the Swiss artist Peter Waldo a.k.a. BellWald live on a song…

Phil Collins enjoys his new life in Switzerland with his wife Orianne and, from 21 April 2001, with new arrival Nicholas. This uplifting phase inspired him to write new songs – an alternative ‘Love Songs’ concept, so to speak. During these months, a number of demos were probably created, of which only two were released – including a song idea from his friend John Martyn, which Phil was allowed to complete.

After the ‘test run’ of the session two years earlier, Phil decides to have Rob Cavallo produce his new album as well. Phil’s homemade pre-productions are used, which are then enhanced by a number of musicians who have not yet appeared in the credits of Collins’ previous solo albums. In addition to the at least 15 newly recorded tracks, there are also the three tracks already recorded in 2000, all of which have been reworked. But only two of them make it onto the album, now entitled Testify, as well as ten of the new tracks…

Anyone hoping that the release of Testify in November would be followed by a tour announcement for the album will be disappointed…for now. There are only a few, shorter live performances to promote the album, but there are two longer Collins live shows on 6 November in London and on 8 November at the opening of the ColorLine Arena in Hamburg.

Phil Collins will be entering the home straight of his second Disney project Brother Bear in the new year at the latest, something he has been working on for the last three years, sometimes more, sometimes less. An ultimately unused demo song dates from this time…

For other language versions of the film without an accompanying soundtrack release, you can get the necessary information on the ‘Charguigou’ page.
Phil Collins will no longer be available as composer for the sequel Brother Bear 2 in 2006, as he will be busy with the Broadway production of Tarzan. Melissa Etheridge will take over the job this time.
One month after the release of Brother Bear, there is already more exciting news from Phil. In November as the year draws to a close, it is announced that Phil Collins will be going on tour next year! However, fans will have to come to terms with the shock that the First Final Farewell Tour is intended as Phil’s last tour ever, as he no longer wants to jeopardise his young family happiness after all his experiences.

After Disney is before Disney! While Phil Collins was not involved in the Tarzan sequel Tarzan & Jane, which was released as a video in 2002, he is back on board for the animated film Tarzan II: The Legend Begins, which is also ‘only’ planned as a video release and is a prequel about Tarzan’s childhood. In addition to a new version of Son Of Man, there are two new songs that will never be released on record and will only be released in conjunction with the film…

After the tour there was a period of silence – at least as far as music was concerned. On 1 December, Phil becomes a father again: the little one will be called Mathew! But there was another news for him: Disney’s successful Tarzan project is to be turned into a Broadway musical, and Phil will once again compose additional songs!

Collins’ young family will take priority for the first nine months of the year, followed by songwriting for the Tarzan musical due to open next year.
But before that, Phil has lined up more farewell shows for the autumn, which will take the band to seldom-visited countries. The tour kicks off on 13th October in Estonia, followed by other northern, eastern and south-eastern European countries as well as the Middle East, Düsseldorf (the only Central European stop), Ireland and the UK, before ending in the Czech Republic on 24th November. On this last leg of the tour, Misunderstanding will once again be omitted, but two other songs will be played, including another Genesis song…

And that closes the chapter ‘Phil Collins on tour’… for now. Because a few days before the end of the tour, five former Genesis members met in Glasgow to see if they could play another concert together…
