Phil Collins – Recording Compendium, Part 8: 1995 – 1998
The 8th part of the Recording Compendium deals with the time around Dance Into The Light and A Hot Night In Paris.
Part 8: Dance Into The Light / A Hot Night In Paris | 1995 – 1998
Last Update: 15/08/2024 | Overview | back to part 7 | on to part 9

After the Far Side Of The World tour, a new personal and professional chapter begins for Phil Collins. He relocates to Switzerland, where he moves in with his new partner Orianne Cevey, and officially resigns from Genesis after 25 years. And as luck would have it, he receives an offer he can’t refuse: Disney wants Phil to write the music for the next animated film Tarzan, which is due to be released in four years’ time! During these months, two collaborations take place: firstly, Phil sings a new interpretation of a Duke Ellington classic by one of his great musical heroes, Quincy Jones, and secondly, a new version of a song from the classic musical West Side Story.

After more calm returned following the private turbulence, he began to work on new material for an upcoming solo album towards the end of the year, as well as recording initial song ideas for the planned Tarzan film.

In the new year, there is a musical reunion with his old friend John Martyn, for whose new album Phil accompanies a number of songs on drums.

While his two ex-colleagues from Genesis begin another chapter in their band’s history with a new singer, Phil uses his new-found freedom to fulfil long-held musical dreams, among other things. He takes the offer from Montreux Jazz Festival boss Claude Nobs to use a free date at this year’s festival as an opportunity to tackle the project ‘The Phil Collins Big Band’. He was able to win over Quincy Jones as big band conductor, saxophone star David Sanborn and Tony Bennett as guest vocalists, and a new troupe was put together from members of the German WDR Big Band, Collins’ current live band and Phil himself as drummer, who would play concerts together in mid-July.
Until then, Phil continues to work on his next solo album and is busy recording demos. Of the almost 20 song ideas, which already clearly show Collins’ new influences, such as African pop, current BritPop and singer/songwriters, several will sooner or later reach the audience in demo versions…

But before the album is recorded, it’s the turn of the Phil Collins Big Band concerts. One third of the setlist consist of Phil’s solo numbers and another third of Genesis songs, all of which have been drastically rearranged into instrumental big band versions. Another third consists of all kinds of jazz standards, with and without vocals. The debut concert will take place on 11 July in London’s Royal Albert Hall, and there are some professional and some audience recordings of the songs played…

Immediately after the big band adventure, Phil Collins is off to record his next solo album, which, after a few difficult, private years, is fittingly called Dance Into The Light and will take place for the first time in France – more precisely in a small, rented castle just 45 minutes by car from his new home in Begnins in Switzerland. Unlike his last album, the 16 songs will once again be recorded with a host of guest musicians, including, surprisingly, his old friend Ronnie Caryl, which he produced together with his favorite producer from the 80s, Hugh Padgham.

The sessions at the Chateau des Avenieres will be used for another production. The legendary Beatles producer George Martin is planning his own album release with many guest stars to enhance his new interpretations of Beatles classics. The rest of the year he is busy with all kinds of promotional activities for the album and singles, with preparations for the planned tour next year and certainly also with further Tarzan demos.

Even before the tour begins (rehearsals for which will take place in Lausanne in Switzerland in January and in Lakeland in Florida in February), there will be a promotional live performance on French TV at the beginning of February, where he will surprisingly include two cover songs in a duet alongside three solo numbers: a classic by the Kinks together with Susanne Vega and an early hit by Prince with the teen favourites from East 17…

After this part of the tour, there will be an unusually long, 5-month break from performing, during which he will no doubt be working on the Tarzan soundtrack. Phil will not appear again until mid-September at a charity concert organised by George Martin for the British Caribbean island of Montserrat, which was badly affected by a volcanic eruption two years previously. Martin’s Air Studios on the island were also destroyed. Phil is once again part of an all-star band for the occasion…

It can be assumed that Phil Collins will be working more intensively on the soundtrack material for Tarzan in the first half of the new year, which is due to be released in cinemas in a year’s time. However, a Collins compilation of his greatest hits is planned for this year. However, a new song is to be released as a single to draw attention to the compilation, which is simply entitled …Hits. To this end, the currently popular R&B artist/producer Babyface has been snapped up to produce an older Cindy Lauper song for Phil.

Until the release of …Hits, Phil wants to use June and July to go on another concert tour with his Phil Collins Big Band after two years. With a partly new line-up, which now also includes singer/pianist Oleta Adams, the band will be on the road in the USA for the second half of June and in Europe for a good two weeks in July. This time the concerts will be recorded in order to compile a live album from the recordings…

A few weeks after completing his tour with the Phil Collins Big Band, Phil is in New York at the beginning of October for live TV appearances to promote his …Hits compilation. On 1 October he played with the Big Band for Live By Request at Sony Studios, the following day he was heard at the Hard Rock Cafe for VH-l Hard Rock Live. On the third day, he was invited by Cathy Rich to play a tribute concert with her father Buddy Rich’s big band. The joint performance with his idol’s band closes the big band circle for Phil, so to speak. The event is also recorded and published.
