Anthony Phillips - Archive Collection Volume II

Track by Track: Detailbetrachteung der Neuauflage von 2022

Overview | review | Tracks Volume I | Tracks Volume II | Masquerade-Special

Note: Although the tracks of the Archive Collection Volume II in the new box set are unchanged from the first release, we nevertheless devote ourselves to a detailed examination of the individual tracks:

CD3 (Archive Collection Volume II, Disc 1)

1. Guitar Song (Demo 1973) (1:58)

Ant composed Guitar Song in 1972 and recorded it in 1973. Unfortunately, it remained an unfinished work that was only rediscovered in the course of compiling the songs and pieces for Archive Collection Volume II.

2. The Anthem from Tarka (Demo 1988)(3:47)

With Tarka all but finished, it was felt that another piece was needed to round off the project. Ant, with the help of Simon Heyworth, adapted the oboe theme from Corncrake Meadow, the fifth piece from the first movement of Tarka, and "crafted" The Anthem from Tarka. Two different mixes of the original demo were edited for Archive Collection Volume II.

3. Deep in the Night (Demo 1977) (5:47)

An instrumental version of an unreleased potential Genesis song that Phillips composed with Mike Rutherford in 1969. This demo was recorded during the same sessions as Beside The Water's Edge (see Archive Collection Volume One, Disc One, Track 4), when Ant was putting together potential songs for the album Wise After The Event, which was still in the planning stages at the time. The track was unfortunately never developed into a fully fledged song.

4. Bleak House (Instrumental Mix 1978) (6:12)

This version of the classic song, sung on Sides by Dale Newman, focuses solely on Ant's piano playing with a few small overdubs.

5. Our Man In Japan (Library Piece 1979) (1:19)

The track One Man In Japan belongs to the category "Library Music" for the company Himan Music, for which Ant had already worked earlier. [A detailed list of Anthony Phillips' library works can be found in this special in the Anthony Phillips Compendium].

6. Child Song (Demo 1973)(3:41)

Shortly after leaving Genesis, Ant wrote the "naively charming" (quote Ant) Child Song, subtitled A Prayer For Us All, in July 1970. Child Song was shortlisted for The Geese & The Ghost, but according to Ant "it didn't really fit in".

7. Old Wives Tale (Solo Version 1976)(4:44)

Ant's solo version of the duet piece that closed the 1982 album Private Parts & Pieces III: Antiques, which Phillips recorded with Quique Berro Garcia. Old Wives Tale is the instrumental version of the 1968 Genesis song Little Leaf.

The following statement on the website guestpectacular.com is extremely original: The song Little Leaf was played by Genesis in one of 1055 shows. There is a 0.09 % chance that this song was heard live. I am a total failure at maths, but methinks this is not a very high probability ...

8. Scottish Suite II (i) Leaping Salmon
(3:03)
9. Scottish Suite II (ii) The Witching Hour
(1:19) (mit Mike Rutherford)
10. Scottish Suite II (iii) Two Truths
(1:19)(mit Mike Rutherford)
11. Scottish Suite II (iv) The Letter
(1:10)
12. Scottish Suite II (v) Walpurgis Night
(1:02)
13. Scottish Suite II (vi) Sweet Reaper
(1:01)
14. Scottish Suite II (vii) Why Sinks This Cauldron?
(0:44)
15. Scottish Suite II (viii) Her Last Sleepwalk
(0:46)

In the spring of 1976, Ant was approached to compose music for a planned series of educational publications combining Shakespearean dialogue with rock music. Two recording sessions took place in June 1976. Mike Rutherford also participated in the second. The music for the project was finished and - gathering dust on the shelf. The originally planned six-album set became a zero-album set. The recorded tracks remained under lock and key until the release of Private Parts & Pieces II: Back To The Pavilion in 1980, for which Phillips picked out some of these pieces. In Scottish Suite II we get to hear most of the rest of the music.

16. Sally (Instrumental Mix 1982) (4:18)

This instrumental mix of Sally is the original 8-track playback of the song, which was later further processed during sessions at Atmosphere Studios for the Invisible Men album. The song itself was originally written for the ATV series Rule Britannia in 1981.

17. Windmill (Demo 1971) (1:26)

A much too short excerpt from an improvisation recorded by Ant on a "pin piano" in the autumn of 1971. Peter Gabriel blew in on Ant at the time and when he heard Windmill, he remarked: "It moves well!" I guess there's no two opinions on that.

18. Tregenna Afternoons (Demo 1973) (7:41)

This is an early demo version of Tregenna Afternoons with interesting instrumentation variations. Ant plays a Stratocaster with a wah-wah pedal in parts.
A little bon mot on the side: Genesis' former drummer Chris Stewart admits in the CD foreword that he has been trying unsuccessfully to replay the piece on guitar for 30 years. Ant finds encouraging words in this regard in the acknowledgements: "Don't stop practising, I still can't play Tregenna Afternoons properly either!"

19. Lofty Vaults (Library Piece 1979) (1:21)

Keyboard library music from 1979. Very nice piece, but much too short!

20. Variation on a Theme of Fantomas (Demo 1973) (5:03)

In the autumn of 1973, Ant was asked to compose the soundtrack for a student film by his friend Philip Black. This piano piece was composed and recorded by Ant at an early stage of work on the soundtrack. Although it was not ultimately used for the film, it presents us with some hints of the themes that were heard in the film. Ant considered putting the complete Fantômas soundtrack on Archive Collection Volume II, but rejected it because the material is too fragmentary.

21. Picardy Pictures (Demo 1972) (4:30)

A melancholic, impressionistic guitar piece recorded around the same time as Beauty and the Beast from the first Private Parts & Pieces album. It contains several guitar parts recorded in multi-tracking with a single Revox tape recorder.

22. Polar Lights (Library Piece 1979) (1:33)

An atmospheric library track. Ant's original keyboard parts were given effects by engineer John Reiner.

23. The Ridolfi Plot (Demo 1978) (6:15)

This track was originally written for Sides and recorded as a demo, but never made it past the demo stage. For the Archive Collection, Ant returned to the original 4-track master and produced a new mix. It features an eight-string guitar with the two low extra strings acting as resonating strings.

24. Falling for Love (Instrumental Mix 1982) (3:34)

This instrumental mix of Falling For Love from Invisible Men completes the first CD of this collection and includes some additional lead guitar parts by Ant that are not heard in the final version of the track.

CD4 (Archive Collection Volume II, Disc 2)

1. Highland Fling (Library Piece 1979) (1:34)

A fine, little, feather-light piece of library music. A nice opener for the second CD of the Archive Collection Volume II. The Highland Fling is a Scottish solo dance.

2. Prelude #1 (1981) (1:36)
3. Siesta (1981) (1:54)
4. Bubble and Squeak (1981) (1:11)

Three short guitar pieces recorded at Send Barns in the summer of 1981. Prelude #1 and Siesta were previously unreleased. The version of Bubble & Squeak is six years older than the one on Private Parts And Pieces VII: Slow Waves, Soft Stars.

5. Guru (Instrumental Mix 1982) (4:42)

As with Sally (Archive Collection Volume II, Disc One, Track 16), this instrumental mix of Guru comes from the first 8-track phase of the recording for the Invisible Men album and offers the opportunity to hear the track without the later overdubs and try your hand at singing it yourself.

6. Shady Arbours (1974) (1:46)

A spontaneous piece recorded by Phillips and Rutherford during the first recording sessions for The Geese & The Ghost. On Shady Arbours, which waited patiently for almost thirty years to be rediscovered and was mixed especially for the Archive Collection, both Ant and Mike play on a twelve-string guitar.

7. West Side Alice (1983) (2:59)

The piano piece West Side Alice, with a touch of West Side Story according to Ant, was composed for the musical Alice but ultimately never used in the show and remained unheard until its current release.

8. Vic's Tango (Demo 1983) (4:16)

Vic's Tango was originally a piano-heavy piece. Ant recorded the guitar version as a demo in April 1983. The original 8-track master tapes of this Phillips-unusual piece were remixed for the Archive Collection. Ant created this demo with South American flair for a film project.

9. Seven Long Years (Instrumental Mix 1976) (3:02)

An instrumental mix of this tender "love song for a missing ballerina" (quote Ant), originally missing from the first Private Parts & Pieces album with vocals.

10. Romeo And Juliet (Library Piece 1976) (0:34)

A very short track from Ant's very first library music project, written and recorded in 1976 and used for a shampoo commercial (!).

11. I Saw You Today (1978) (4:43)

I Saw You Today was written by Phillips after he left Genesis. This song was released in another version in 1977 on Private Parts & Pieces II: Back To The Pavilion. This recording of the song from the following year was previously unreleased.

12. The Anthem from Tarka (Alternate Mix Of Demo 1988) (1:01)

A much too short mix variant of The Anthem's demo without a drum box. The full mix can be heard on Archive Collection Volume II, Disc One, Track 2.

13. Quadrille (from Alice) (1983) (2:57)

This instrumental was used as musical accompaniment for a choreographed passage in the second act of the musical Alice. This demo version is the first time material from the score of Alice has been released. It begs the question: why are we being deprived of the rest of the music?

14. Desert Suite (i) Sand Dance(1:45)
15. Desert Suite (ii) Pipelines (1:07)
16. Desert Suite (iii) End Theme (1:40)

Atmospheric world music from Phillips, written and recorded in the summer of 1980 for a film project in Saudi Arabia. These tracks were mixed from the original 8-track master tape especially for the Archive Collection. The End Theme is somewhat reminiscent of the Tony Banks composition Spring for the soundtrack of The Wicked Lady, which was, however, written after Desert Suite.

17. Fantomas Opening Theme (Film Music 1973) (2:30)

The opening theme of the student film Fantômas (see Archive Collection Volume II, Disc One, Track 20) appropriately exudes a certain French flair. For the recording of this track, Ant asked former Genesis drummer John Silver to contribute some percussive elements, so this was the first time Ant and John had worked together since the recording of From Genesis To Revelation.

18. Sistine (Instrumental Mix 1982) (3:44)

An instrumental mix of this song, originally recorded during the Invisible Men sessions but only released on the fourth Private Parts & Pieces album A Catch At The Tables.

19. Sisters of Remindum (Basic Mix 1977/1978) (4:28)

This track combines two separate recordings made a year apart. The first half was made during 1977 rehearsals for Wise After The Event.
The recording of the second part took place in 1978 at Essex Studios, where the track (under the working title Song of the Five Producers) was further processed for Sides. The mix heard here is the actual rhythm track without the later overdubs. Breathtaking what drummer Mike Giles and bassist John G. Perry play here in 9/8 time.

20. Will the Last Man Off the Ice Rink (Please Turn Out the Lights) (1973) (1:19)

Nowadays, you go to the music shop, buy a delay effect device and that's it. In the past, musicians had to really experiment. Pioneers! In this piece, Ant works with tape delays to create an echo effect.

21. Finale (Instrumental Mix 1982) (5:11)

This previously unreleased track, recorded during the Invisible Men sessions, forms the finale of Archive Collection Volume II. The track only made it marginally beyond the 8-track recording stage (which can be heard here), although it was transferred to a 24-track tape machine at Atmosphere Studios and drums were added, among other things. Finale did not make it onto the regular album and was only brought out of obscurity in 2017 on the reissue of Invisible Men.
