With Mick Colman, Anthony Phillips writes his first own songs, including Do The Jack and Think Again. The first recordings with the band, which in the meantime manages without Rutherford, are made in the improvised home studio of friend Brian Roberts in April.

By the end of the year, Anon had shrunk to a trio. Phillips and Rutherford work on new material at the turn of the year. They produced Try A Little Sadness, Listen On Five and That's Me.
|
Anthony Phillips and Mike Rutherford join forces with the rest of the band The Garden Wall (Tony Banks and Peter Gabriel) at Easter to record together at Brian Roberts. The new collective's first demo includes the songs Patricia, Don't Want You Back, Try A Little Sadness, Listen On Five and That's Me. After producer Jonathan King takes notice of the new troupe, more recording sessions follow in more professional studios during the summer and autumn. Finally, in December, with the new drummer Chris Stewart, the first single under the name Genesis with the B-side That's Me is recorded. |
|
More demos are recorded in March, followed by a second single in April with One-Eyed Hound by Phillips/Rutherford as the B-side. In the summer, numerous demo recordings are made, some of which are then selected for the planned first album. Finally, in September, the album session takes place with new drummer John Silver, including songs by Phillips such as In The Beginning, In Hiding (formerly Patricia), Window and Visions Of Angels. Following the album recordings, the members initially go their own ways again. Anthony Phillips subsequently wrote songs such as Let Us Now Make Love, Little Leaf and Creation, and Queen Bettine together with Mike Rutherford. |
|
In the spring to summer, Phillips produced works such as Collections, Stranger, Lucy: An Illusion and The Beggar And The Thief, and worked increasingly with Rutherford on pieces written on two 12-string guitars. By the time Genesis reunites in the summer, they have quite a few compositions to show for it, including D Instrumental (later The Geese And The Ghost), Beside The Waters Edge, Deep In The Night and Silver Song - the latter as a farewell song for drummer John Silver, who would no longer be with the band from the autumn. In August, the band goes into the studio to record four songs as a demo, including the Phillips/Rutherford-heavy tracks Pacidy, Family (later Dusk) and White Mountain. |
Since not all of the Phillips/Rutherford pieces seem "band-ready", the two record some material together during a rehearsal-free weekend in September.
Two further Rutherford/Phillips tracks, Morning Mist and Leamington Spa, were on the list of possible recordings as well, but Mike and Ant decided not to record them.
Starting in October, Genesis is preparing for their first gigs with new drummer John Mayhew. The first setlists include In The Beginning, Visions Of Angels, Little Leaf, Pacidy, Family, White Mountain and Let Us No Make Love.
|
At the beginning of the year Genesis record four tracks for a planned BBC project by the artist Michael Jackson, and at the end of February a BBC Nightride session with the songs Pacidy, Let Us Now Make Love and Stagnation. After numerous gigs, which Anthony Phillips finds less and less good, the second album Trespass is recorded in June/July with songs like Visions Of Angels, Dusk, White Mountain and Stagnation. Ant plays his last gig with the band on 18 July 1970. In the days following his departure, he writes songs such as Which Way The Wind Blows, God If I Saw Her Now and parts of Henry: Portraits From Tudor Times and records several of his works at home with the help of his friends Harry Williamson and David Rootes. |

Phillips starts studying music & composition and gets piano lessons. He writes a long piano piece that would develop into Leaping Salmon. In 1970 he also writes the song I Saw You Today.
Alongside his studies, Ant writes further piano works with Winter's Thaw and The Old House. And in the summer, together with Harry Williamson, he wrote what would later become three parts of the Gypsy Suite on two guitars. He also wrote the guitar pieces Shoreline and Winter Lights, which would not be recorded until 48 years later. In 1971, however, songs were again documented on tape.

In late summer, they use the advance from Charisma Records to buy a proper mixing desk and two TEAC 4-track tape machines. The studio in Ant's parents' house Send Barns is thus made ready for the recording of Ant and Mike's planned album project. In October, the first recording sessions begin, for which Ant's brother Rob and Steve Hackett's brother John are already working alongside Mike.
