The long-awaited box set for The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway will be released on 28 March 2025. An announcement will probably follow on Friday.
There have been rumours for some time about a possible box set to mark the 50th anniversary of the Genesis album The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway, which was first released on 22 November 1974.
At the latest since a mention in Record Collector this summer, it was clear that these rumours were true. There was some surprise that no official announcement followed until today.
Yesterday, however, a teaser image was posted on the official Genesis social media channels, hinting at an imminent announcement (see below). We have also learned from a reliable source that the box set will be released on 28 March 2025. We assume that the announcement will follow on Friday, the 50th anniversary of the album release.
The set will include: The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway remastered from the original 1974 tapes (2LPs or 2 CDs)
The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway Live At The Shrine Auditorium full live show from January 24th, 1975, including the two encore tracks for the very first time, “Watcher of the Skies/The Musical Box (3LPs or 2CDs)
A Blu-ray audio disc with Dolby ATMOS and Hi Res mixes of the album, along with other select visual images
Select Demos and Outtakes From Headley Grange (part of a digital download card with the full audio from the set)
A coffee table style book with Alexis Petridis liner notes, telling the story of The Lamb from the writing sessions to live performances, including band member commentary. The book will also feature images from Armando Gallo and other noted photographers, memorabilia and a 1975 Tour Programme reproduction
What we know about the format:
There will be at least two formats. We know for sure that there will be a vinyl boxset (5LP/Blu-ray - price around 200€) and a CD boxset (4CD/Blu-ray, price around 100€). The format prices are approximate values that were communicated as part of a sales sheet.
There has been much speculation recently about the content. There have been hints from the record company and Tony Banks has also mentioned a few details in interviews, although he has remained very vague.
The missing multitrack recordings of the show at the Shrine Auditorium Los Angeles have also been found. This recording contains it, as well as the encores. This show was already used for the Archive 1967-1975 box set. However, several overdubs were recorded for this release. This applied in particular to the vocals. The last song on the album (it) was actually a kind of new studio version, as the available tapes did not contain this track also also not the Encores. So it will be interesting to see what this famous LA show will be like on the new boxset.
What's on the Blu-ray?
Dolby Atmos and Stereo Mix.
Are there any other extras?
Yes, selected visual extras, plus Select Demos and Outtakes From Headley Grange (part of a digital download card with the full audio from the set).
A coffee table style book with Alexis Petridis liner notes, telling the story of The Lamb from the writing sessions to live performances, including band member commentary. The book will also feature images from Armando Gallo and other noted photographers, memorabilia and a 1975 Tour Programme reproduction
UPDATE - this is the artwork:
Why is the set not being released until 2025?
The question remains as to why they didn't manage to release the box set this Friday. The album will actually be celebrating its 50th anniversary. The answer probably has something to do with Peter Gabriel.
Although Genesis have sold their entire catalogue to Concord, it can be assumed that Peter Gabriel has to give his blessing to all Genesis releases from the Gabriel era. The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway in particular is close to his heart. It is therefore likely that the coordination of this box set lies with RealWorld. This would also explain why Tony Banks has remained very vague in his recent interviews and apparently didn't know any details about some things.
UPDATE: Track listing
More info about the content: The vinyl boxset tracklisting shows a 2024 Remaster of the album, plus the complete Shrine show (also a 2024 Remaster and with both Encores). The Blu-ray contains the 2024 Remaster of the album (mist likely Atmos and Stereo mix) plus another mix (this is not conformed, but could mean it's the original mix).
We'll know more on Friday ...
