Phil Collins: New Going Back Interview

On 16th September, Phil Collins gave a public interview for the Masterclass series of fnac.com. We have a summary of his appearance:

AboutGoing Back: It was interesting for him to reproduce the sound of the music he was listening to in his younger days. His challenge was to copy the style of each of the three main Motown drummers. He also enjoyed playing with the musicians from those days and hearing their anecdotes in between. The front cover of the album shows Phil on his very first drumkit (which you cannot see, unfortunately).

About the time between Phil the Motown-fan and Phil the Motown-performer: In 1968 he played Congas for George Harrison – and 30 years later Harrison played him a practical joke about it. His friendship with Eric Clapton also goes back to that time. He stayed with Genesis for such a long time also because he felt responsible for the people working in the crew, whose livelihood were depending on the band. About the musical changes of the band: “I didn’t change Genesis, we all grew up. Genesis always wanted a hit single, even before I joined the band. I don’t want to be blamed for the change, we were all to blame, if there’s blame to be allotted”.

About Going Back live in New York: It felt like the logical and proper conclusion to take the music with these musicians [The Funk Brothers] on stage. He wanted to finish the journey he has started.

About further shows: „If the record did well, I would feel good bringing this band back together to do a couple of shows in France Germany or Holland, just a handful of shows. I don’t want to tour again.“ But he makes clear: „My kids come first“.
