Part 3: 1984 / Antiques / Invisible Men / A Catch At The Tables | 1980 - 1983

Last update: 12th June 2022

In the first January of the 80s, Ant records a total of 16 song ideas that were developed at the end of last year for the planned Masquerade adaptation in collaboration with Rupert Hine, but the project is not pursued further for the time being. It will be decades before some of these demos are released.

In May and June, Ant experiments with his synthesizers again and used a drum machine for the first time - the legendary Roland CR-78, which Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins also discovered for themselves. Two works crystallise that set the direction for his next album.

From 14 August, Ant will be back at work recording more takes for his next album. In September, the track Heart Of Darkness is recorded independently. Furthermore, for the first time he is asked to contribute the music for a planned TV documentary series, and interrupts work on his album for this. The production for the 6-part Rule Britannia - Pictures Of A People Like Us, which is to be broadcast in the summer of 1981, runs in October and November.

Now with Richard Scott on board as creative collaborator and drum machine programmer, the basic tracks of the various title track parts of the album, now titled after George Orwell's 1984, will be completed in January.

After a year and a half, Anthony Phillips decides to revisit the idea of setting Masquerade to music and works out several new pieces together with Richard Scott from April to June, also drawing on some of the themes from his original demos from 1980. Richard's girlfriend Lindsey Moore and he himself take over the vocals. The previously unreleased Silver Song is also used in parts - and the actually finished instrumental Lights On The Hill becomes a song here. In the end, however, Rod Argent got the nod for the musical adaptation.

In September Ant goes on holiday to Rome and is inspired by the Sistine Chapel to write the song Sistine. The rest of the year also sees the creation of Guru and the song Sally, based on a piece originally intended for Rule Britannia.

At Ant's new home in Clapham in south London, February and March see the inauguration of Englewood Studios with demo recordings of a new musical idea he is developing again with Richard Scott: based on the characters of Lewis Carroll's Alice In Wonderland, the modern rock musical Alice is being created, set in the future, which will also bring a new use for some of the Masquerade songs.

The two also collaborate on After The Fire drummer Iva Twydell's solo album Duel.

From April to summer 1982, they both worked in Ant's new home studio on a total of 28 basic tracks for a new album, which this time was to be more pop-oriented at the request of the record company. One of the tracks from this time - In The Valleys - is only released 13 years later in a new recording.
