As the most prominent member of Genesis, Phil Collins was considered an absolute "workaholic" for many years, which many people reduce to his omnipresent output as a solo artist and with Genesis, especially in the 1980s. However, it should not be forgotten that he was by far the most outgoing musician from the Genesis cosmos and since the beginning of his career as a drummer at the end of the 60s, he always put out his feelers for new fields of activity and challenges. Even before he took off as a solo artist, he was already in demand as a session musician for various music productions in the 70s and was also a permanent member of the jazz rock band Brand X. In addition to his skills as a drummer, percussionist and singer, he expanded his spectrum in the 80s in terms of songwriting and production, for which he was brought on board by quite a few legends.
With this chronologically structured compendium, we attempt to assign the many recordings and productions (excluding the Genesis material) from over five decades to the original periods of origin. With the exception of the 60s and 70s, which we split into two parts at the time of Peter Gabriel's departure from Genesis (summer 1975), we look at individual solo album periods - usually from Phil's home demos to the end of the tour. Primarily it's studio material, but also non-album tracks that were only played live. The supplementary information is limited to the most necessary information such as recording and first release dates and the best current physical or digital source. Bootlegs are also taken into account. We do not provide detailed descriptions of individual tracks/versions here.
As a rule, the tracks are listed in chronological order of creation (not release date!). The parts usually end after tours for the respective albums and begin from the phase in which new material was worked on.
Each listing is usually divided as follows:
1. collaborations following the previous tour
2. demos
3. album tracks
4. outtakes that were created during the album sessions but did not make it onto the album
5. different versions of the album tracks and outtakes
6. live tracks of which no released studio versions are known to date
7. official live releases
8. collaborations that were made until the end of the tour.
Due to the sometimes very dense sequence of publications, this structure cannot always be applied consistently. Furthermore, we understand all parts as "living documents" that can be further developed at any time.
There are different versions of many tracks. Additions to the track name were recorded according to the following scheme:
(addition in round brackets and bold font) = officially published title supplement.
[addition in square brackets and normal font] = unofficially used title supplement - serve to distinguish in this list.
To differentiate, all versions of individual tracks were listed with supplementary name additions. Where no official title supplement existed, it was marked as follows:
[demo] = song or version of a track recorded in embryo stage.
[original version] = different version/recording of a track that was professionally recorded before its album release.
[original mix] = a slightly different mix of the album track that was released before the album release.
[alternate mix] = slightly different mix of a track
[instrumental] = track without vocals, but otherwise identical to the album version
[instrumental mix] = track without vocals, mixed differently from the original version
[full length version] = track in a longer version than the album version
[edit] = shortened version of the album version in the same mix
[remix] = remixed/edited version
