Phil's US record company Atlantic Records is celebrating its 40th birthday in mid-May, and has organized a high-profile All Star live concert for the occasion, which will be broadcast live on TV and radio. However, in addition to performing with Genesis, a solo number and being part of an All Star background choir with Foreigner, Phil will also perform two classics as a duet with Sam Moore - one half of the legendary duo Sam & Dave - and the ex-Blues Brothers Band, including You Don't Know Like I Know, which has already been recorded with Eric Clapton.

The demo is also given to Buster's filmmakers as a suggestion from Phil, who promptly use it for a rough cut of the film. Originally not planned at all, Buster actor Phil Collins finally participates as a musician and singer in the music for the film and collaborates with one of his Motown heroes, Lamont Dozier, for a fitting 60s feeling. In the end, he is involved in five soundtrack pieces, three of which become hits...

It continues four weeks later with another charity concert called Picnic By The Lake. The all-star band put together by Gary Brooker (Procol Harum) is called Band Du Lac, and Phil Collins is on drums and sometimes does lead vocals. As is often the case, these events are an opportunity for him to perform songs for the first (and often unique) time.

1990

The '90s begin for Phil Collins with rehearsals starting in mid-January for his upcoming Seriously, Live! World Tour, which will keep him busy from February to October. That's why he's not in the band line-up for the Eric Clapton concerts at London's Royal Albert Hall, which have always taken place in January or February for the past few years, but drop by anyway to contribute some tambourine...

The tour continues in mid-April, first in Europe and then in the USA from the end of May. During the concert-free days, a 45-minute, funny TV special is produced there, for which Phil Collins has to present some of his songs in completely different garb...

From March until September, Phil once again holed up with his two Genesis colleagues in their joint "farm" to write and record the next album We Can't Dance. At some point during this time, the basic framework of a cover version of an Earth, Wind & Fire classic was also recorded there with Phil and Eric Clapton under Nathan East's direction, which would not be completed until 25 years later.
