Part 2: Early Collins era with Genesis | 1975 - 1978

Last update: 20 Feb 2023

1975

After the end of the "Lamb" tour at the end of May '75, and Peter Gabriel's departure as Genesis frontman, Collins immediately throws himself into all kinds of diversionary activities as a session musician. He starts with a session for a certain Eddie Howell, where he serves as backing band with his colleagues from Brand X...

In October/November, recording sessions for the first Genesis album without Peter Gabriel as singer, A Trick Of The Tail would follow, which only during the recording Phil Collins for lack of "alternatives" also become the new singer of the band. The album includes the Collins/Banks composition Robbery, Assault And Battery.

1976

Phil uses the winter of 1975/76 for first live activities with Brand X, who already bring new material on stage, some of which would never be found on later albums of the band...

In the spring of 1976, his main band Genesis is back in focus, with whom Phil now tours for the first time in a new role as singer and frontman. In the one-month break between the American and European tour sections, presumably in May, there was an unusual reunion with ex-colleague Peter Gabriel, who recorded demos of his own songs at Trident Studios and, in addition to Phil's drumming qualities, also enlisted the help of his ex-colleagues Mike Rutherford on bass, Anthony Phillips on keys and Brand X guitarist John Goodsall...

After successfully completing the A Trick Of The Tail tour with Genesis in mid-July, Collins' drumming fingers are already tingling again. His calendar fills up over the summer with gigs with Brand X and numerous studio sessions by/with Scottish singer/songwriter William Lyall (ex-Pilot), jazz-rock formation Nova, Phil Lynott's Thin Lizzy and the next cocept album by Jack Lancaster & Robin Lumley...

In 1976 another album is released with Collins' participation, but unfortunately there are no more precise details about session and/or release dates, i.e. the recordings theoretically already took place in 1975: the debut album of Icelandic-born keyboardist Jakob Magnússon (later known as Jack Magnet), whom he met at Peter Banks' Empire sessions...

After the "hobbies" in the summer, Phil goes to work with Genesis in September and October 1976 to record the next album Wind & Wuthering, which includes Collins' co-compositions Blood On The Rooftops with Steve Hackett and Wot Gorilla? with Tony Banks. Before the tour for the album will start on January 1, however, he will probably record a soundtrack for the film The Squeeze with David Hentschel again in November and his second album with Brand X in December, which will also include Collins' own songs for the first time...

1975

The Genesis Wind & Wuthering tour in 1977 will take six months to complete by early July, with a nearly month-long break in April allowing Phil to both complete another session for Brian Eno and use the time with Brand X for a release show for the Moroccan Roll album at London's Marquee Club. One track will find a home on the live album Livestock. For other Brand X live activities starting in June, Kennwood Dennard will be hired as Collins' replacement....

After the end of the Genesis tour, which is documented on the upcoming live album Seconds Out, Phil participates in the summer as a percussionist in recordings of the formation Café Jacques, which are produced by Rupert Hine - for whom he would later work even more often. He also takes the opportunity to support the Brand X on percussion at the Hammersmith Odeon gig for the last live recordings for the planned Livestock album and to play new tracks as the main drummer again a month later...

With interruptions, Phil is on tour with Genesis for eight months from the end of March 1978. There are more or less short breathers at the end of April to mid-May, mid-June to mid-July, in the first half of August, second half of September and late October to late November. When exactly he offered his services to Café Jacques, Rod Argent and pianist Raphael Rudd (a discovery of The Who's Pete Townshend) during this time is unclear...

The Genesis tour ends in early December, and with it Phil's first marriage. To save the same, he follows his still-wife to Canada, which puts the future of his musical career, especially with Genesis, in question. His time out should last three months.
