Ayanna Witter-Johnson, cellist in Peter Gabriel's band, has also releases her own music - most recently in November with the LSO Percussion Ensemble.
For many visitors to Peter Gabriel's shows, she was a highlight of the live band: Ayanna Witter-Johnson, who mostly played the cello, but also played keyboards and sang (see also our tour report). Ayanna also makes music herself and has already released several albums, which can be found on Bandcamp, for example.
Last month saw the release of the album Ocean Floor, which she recorded together with the LSO Percussion Ensemble (from the London Symphony Orchestra). The press release says: "She combines alternative R&B with classical music and influences from soul, hip-hop and reggae, singing and playing the cello at the same time. Together with an outstanding quartet from the LSO Percussion Ensemble, the album's tracks cover a wide range of emotions in an ever-changing musical texture."
Through her work with the LSO, she forged a friendship with LSO Principal Percussionist, Neil Percy, which became the starting point for the recording.
“His enthusiasm for my music moves me to tears and was the catalyst behind our first collaboration and subsequent commission, Forever. The organic development of this project is something I will treasure forever, because above all, I have felt the fullest support in expressing myself exactly as I am, and that goes beyond words.”
