After the rather unfortunate development of the OVO album and especially the Millennium Dome show, Peter focussed his work on the upcoming album, which had beed announced quite a few times already (see also our special, The Making Of UP). In 2000/01, the first new song from the UP sessions saw the light of day ...
Simultaneously with his long awaited new studio album, Peter produced a full soundtrack for the movie Rabbit-Proof Fence, which was released a couple of months before UP, entitled Long Walk Home. The soundtrack contains elements from both, OVO and UP ...

The album UP was finally released in September 2002 - 10 years after the last reas Peter Gabriel studio album US. Some stuff from the US recording sessions was even used for UP: We are aware of early demos of Sky Blue and Burn You Up Burn You Down (which was deleted from the UP tracklist shortly before its release). But also from the period following the Secret World tour, there are live tracks, demos and early versions from songs such as Signal To Noise or I Grieve, which became some kind of a documentary for the genesis of UP (see part 8). On Long Walk Home there were alternate versions of Sky Blue (Cloudless and Ngankarrparni), and also elements from Signal To Noise were used in some of the tracks.
The long perdiod of making the record also meant that only a part of the recording sessions were used for the final album tracklist. So it's not wonder that besides the already mantioned Nocturnals, further (more or less) complete songs surfaced in the due course ...

All tracks were most likely candidates for the originally intended follow-up record I/O (also check out our special The Making Of I/O). Peter originally wanted to release another album just 18 months after UP - simply due to the many tracks he had not used for UP. I/O has not been released to this day. Some other song titles were rumoured or mentioned in interviews or they are listed at www.BMI.com. It is possible that working titles of already released tracks are among the following tracks: Silver Screen, Chinese Whisper, Deep Heat, Fast One, Girl In The Water, Perfect Teeth, Subway Siren, The Talking House, Soft City, Funk Bone, Clap Trap, Macca, The Way Home, Tremolo, Egg Pain, Velvet, Escape, Will They Survive?, One Amazing Day, Pearl Divers, Recently, To The Temple, After The Rain, Land Yacht Overlay, Children (Greenpeace), Velvet Curtain (69), Green (70), F Chords (101), Sufi Bone (99), Hillside (65), Flane (18), Drewetts (1), Sea View (51), Grief (63), 9 (97), Love Forever, Flame, Healing Tower...
And - as natural - a lot of alternate versions and remix versions of the album tracks were released. We can assume that the following list is just the basis of a large number of alternate versions ...

Just in time before christmas, another solo career spanning compilation was released - HIT. It was released in different versions containing an additional CD called MISS, which contained different stuff depending of the country of release. Different versions for the US, the European and the German market were produced. Relevant versions of these tracks were already listed in earlier parts of the compendium. As some of you may remember, Peter had offered a Gabriel-vocal version of OVO, called Son Of Ovo, to record companies but they went for HIT instead. It was also the last album Peter did in the frame of a record contract with a major label ...
Besides a new remix of the '87 b-side Curtains for the computer game "Myst IV - Revelation" in three versions (see part 5), a remix and jingles for a french TV station were released during the time of the tour ...
UP was followed by a long tour. It all started in fall 2002 in North America, followed by Europe in early 2003 and yet again North America in late spring / early summer 2003. The tour was recorded and filmed for a concert film release and 19 official bootlegs from the summer tour, which contained full shows directy from the soundboard without further editing. The tracklist varies from show to show so we only list all tracks that were played at least once ...
An edited version of one of the tracks was released on CD as a giveaway with a newspaper ...

For the orchestra album New Blood, Peter rerecorded Darkness, The Drop and The Book Of Love in 2010/2011. Meanwhile, the long awaited follow up record I/O was never released. Instead, Peter released the output from the Bug Blue Ball sessions of the nineties. After that, Peter got disctracted again with the Scratch My Back project ...
